520 |a A case study is presented of a secondary student teacher, focusing on her adaptation to the role of a teacher, and factors that influenced the adaptation process. The student teacher described is one of a growing number of women who are making the decision to become professionals later in life, after having experienced roles such as marriage, parenting, and other jobs. The study was conducted over a 10-week period of student teaching. This student teacher's development as a teacher is traced through changes in her teaching and related changes in the language with which she described her experiences as a student teacher. For example, as the period progressed, she devoted increasing amounts of time to instruction, and talked less about classroom management per se and more about the impact of instruction on order in the class. Her adaptation to the role of a teacher was influenced significantly by the personal resources she had due to her age and life experience. They provided her with the strength to operate according to her own values, even when they differed dramatically from those of her cooperating teacher. This process of development is discussed by drawing on the role theory as well as existing literature on the socialization of teachers. (Author/JD).
