After initially moving to Colorado in 1878, he permanently moved to Gunnison in 1883. During his life there, he ranched, served on school boards, and participated in civic and political organizations, including being a member of the local post of the Grand Republic of the Army. Toward the end of his life, he pursued the treasured Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army, a goal which required an Act of Congress.
