As easterners craved, even demanded, information on the West, those who dared to venture beyond the Mississippi had an opportunity to show and tell tales of a virtually unknown land. As a result scores of frontier originators began to surface. Each had his own story and his own perception as to what the West was or should be. For the storyteller, as for his eastern audience, too often the truth of the West was lost in its telling.
