Stands are best maintained by precommercial cleaning of regeneration, intermediate commercial thinning, commercial and clear-cut harvesting before 80 years. In stands so managed, water yields and quality, forage yields, and recreational values need not be more at risk than from insect-caused mortality and subsequent wildfire. Wildlife is affected by both natural and man-caused perturbations. | |
