Summary: Abstract: Results of a 1985 nationwide survey of more than 1500 maternal and child health care programs serving low-income women are presented in this report from the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition. An executive summary identifies major goals, strategies, and needs of respondents. A summary of a series of interviews conducted with Black and Mexican/American Women and their health care providers identifies strategies, topics, and dissemination routes for education materials. A review of the health education literature addressing low-income and minority populations provides background information relative to the survey findings. Survey results are categorized into the following types of services, health care settings, or educational programs: pregnancy, prenatal, postnatal, comprehensive, breast feeding, nutrition, substance use, rural populations, native Americans, and adolescents.
The types of findings included for each category include program characteristics, services, strategies, staffing, outreach, educational material needs, successes, and additional observations. Various types of maternal and infant health resources (coalitions, clearinghouses, books and directories) are identified. A copy of the survey instrument and the names and addresses of survey respondents are provided.
