The illustrations and the four maps are reproduced from the designs in the original manuscript. "Obras de Oviedo y juicio crítico de las mismas. Sus principales caractéres como historiador. Catálogo cronológico de sus escritos": v. 1, p. lxxxi-cvii. "Voces americanas empleadas por Oviedo," followed by a short bibliography of early grammars and vocabularies of Indian languages: v. 4, p. [593]-[608] "Libro XII de la IIIa parte ... que tracta de los infortunios é naufragios": v. 4, p. [462]-592. The "Historia" is divided into three parts containing 50 books in all. A fourth part is mentioned by the author, in his Quinquagenas, 1555, 1. pt.e, proh., as being in process of composition; beyond, this reference and occasional allusions to the fourth part in his "Historia" nothing is known of it. The present is the first complete edition of the three parts. The "Biographie universelle" erroneously mentions in its article on Oviedo a complete ed., published by the Marquis de los Trujillos, in 1783. The first part (books 1-19) and a few chapters of the 50th book (prohemio and chapters 1-10) were published by the author, with title "La historia general de las Indias" (on verso of t.-p.: Primera parte de la historia natural y general de las indias yslas [?] tierra firme del mar oceano; escripta por el capitan gonçalo hernandez de Ouiedo [?] valdes ...) Colophon: Fin dela primera parte ... La qual se acabo[?] imprimio en la muy noble [?] muy leal cibdad de Seuilla, en la emprèta de Iuam Cromberger ... Año de mil y quinientos y treynta y cinco Años." It was republished in Salamanca, 1547, with title: Cronica de las Indias. La hystoria general de las Indias agora nueuamente impressa corregida y emendada 1547. Y con la conquista del Peru [por Francisco de Xerez] A copy without the Xerez is mentioned by. Harrisse, Bibl. amer. vet., Add. no. 163. An Italian translation of the first part, by Ramusio, appeared in 1555 in the 3d vol. of his Navigationi. A French translation of the first 10 books by Jean Poleur was pub. under title: Histoire naturelle et générale des Indes et terres fermes de la grande mer océane ... Paris , 1555.
