The "Historia" is divided into three parts containing 50 books in all. A fourth part is mentioned by the author, in his Quinquagenas, 1555, 1. pt.e, proh., as being in process of composition; beyond, this reference and occasional allusions to the fourth part in his "Historia" nothing is known of it. The present is the first complete edition of the three parts. The "Biographie universelle" erroneously mentions in its article on Oviedo a complete ed.,
published by the Marquis de los Trujillos, in 1783. The first part (books 1-19) and a few chapters of the 50th book (prohemio and chapters 1-10) were published by the author, with title "La historia general de las Indias" (on verso of t.-p.: Primera parte de la historia natural y general de las indias yslas [?] tierra firme del mar oceano; escripta por el capitan gonçalo hernandez de Ouiedo [?] valdes ...)
Colophon: Fin dela primera parte ... La qual se acabo[?] imprimio en la muy noble [?] muy leal cibdad de Seuilla, en la emprèta de Iuam Cromberger ... Año de mil y quinientos y treynta y cinco Años." It was republished in Salamanca, 1547, with title: Cronica de las Indias. La hystoria general de las Indias agora nueuamente impressa corregida y emendada 1547.
