|a Arriving at Blue Mesa trading post near Gallup, New Mexico in 1914 as the young bride of a Navaho trader, Franc Johnson Newcomb spent the next twenty-five years as a friend and neighbor of the Navahos. As she lived among them, she observed their ceaseless labor for food, their struggle against disease and illness, and their efforts to retain their rites, traditions, and ceremonies. In this book she tells about her friends, their struggles, and their joys - from healing ceremonies and means of exorcising evil spirits to the acquiring of special "powers." What emerges is a rare insight into the lives of the Navaho people.
