Sugar Loaf Dam will be one of the major eastern slope features of the $170-million water resource development project, which is being construct~d ~o convey water from Colorado River tributaries at abou.t 9,880 feet e1evat-icn on the western slope of the Rockies through the Continental DiviJe for use in thf; Arkansas River Basin in southeastern Colorado. The contract goes to the joint venture of Colorado Constructors, Inc., and A. s. Horner Construction Co., Inc., Denver, Colorado, on the lowest of five blds received under Specification No. DC-6345. Second low bidder at $6,112,568 was Green Construction Co., Des Moines, Iowa; and third wan Western Contracting Corporation, Sioux City, Iowa, at $7,610,913. Sugar LJaf Dami~ to be an eartbfiJJ embankment 2~025 feet long at i±.s rr~$t and 1;5 feet high above the bed c,f Lake Fork, an Arkansas River tributary high up on the eastern slope of the Divide. It will form a 136,100 acre-foot reservoir . Other work under the contract includes construction of a dike 475 feet long and 10 feet high, a diversion dam with a reinforced concrE::te wall and riprap prote,1· +.i cn,and the relocation of existing il'rigation ditches and six miles of roacis. Work under the contract is to be completed in l,200 days, and is expecteJ to generate some 250 man-years ~r employment at the contract site and an equ£1 amount elsewhere. Sugar Loaf Dam will be built just downstream of an existing privstel~-owned dam of the same name.
